Happy Birthday, America!

Dear America,

We are so sorry to be apart from you on your special day. Please know that although we occasionally visit other countries, you are number one in our hearts. You are the country we choose to live in and the giver of the passport number that I have memorized (though I continue to struggle with the expiration date and have accidentally lied to several countries).

Through some of our recent travels, I have come to appreciate your openness and tolerance. True, you have not given me a house and financial security like the UAE and you do not provide free healthcare like India, but you do let me drink the tap water, wear shorts and a tank top in 110 degree heat, and you do everything in your power to ensure I am not raped at work. You do not expect me to stay home and sweep and swab while my husband/father/son is at work. You also let me pray in the same room as everyone else or, as is more often the case, do not judge me if I spend Sunday morning at improv workshop and brunch.

While we can all agree that you are not a perfect country, I do think you're at least trying real hard. I really respect that. I also think you have a pretty flag and it is considerate that you offer enough landscape varieties to please a wide range of people.

And your commitment to free soda refills is unsurpassed.

Have a wonderful day today! I look forward to celebrating with you in a few weeks!

Yours in citizenship,
Kelly
